Feeling Overwhelmed? Here’s How to Manage Stress Before It Manages You

Wellbeing Tips · Sunday, Oct 06, 2024

We’ve all been there—feeling the pressure of stress building up and trying to push through, thinking it’s the only way to keep going. But is powering through really the best idea? Often, it's more effective to hit pause and take a step back.

Ignoring stress can take a toll on your mental and physical wellbeing, and recognizing the signs early can help you avoid burnout. Here’s how stress can impact you and what you can do to manage it effectively.

How Stress Affects You

Your Mood

Stress can make you feel restless, easily irritable, or even angry. It can also cause you to lose focus, making it difficult to concentrate on tasks or enjoy your usual activities.

Your Body

Ever noticed that stress often comes with physical discomfort? You might experience headaches, stomachaches, muscle tension, or fatigue.

Your Behaviour

Stress can also change the way you act. You may find yourself eating more or less than usual, having angry outbursts, or withdrawing from social activities.

Over time, all this can wear you down.

What Can You Do About It?

If you’ve noticed any of these signs of stress, it's time to take action. Here are some techniques to try out:

Practice Mindfulness

Take a moment to check in with your body. Are your muscles tense? Are you clenching your jaw or furrowing your brow? If so, take a deep breath and slowly release the tension. By focusing on specific areas of stress in your body, you can help calm your mind as well.

Take a Break

Sometimes, the best thing you can do is step away from what’s overwhelming you. Whether it's a quick walk outside, listening to calming music, or practising deep breathing exercises, a break can help reset your mind and reduce the intensity of your stress.

Remember, pushing through isn’t always the answer.

Recognizing when you need a break and giving yourself permission to take a moment can make all the difference. Your wellbeing is worth it!
