The Path to Wellbeing Is Unique to Each of Us

Struggling to meet basic needs takes a toll on wellbeing and mental health. Things such as housing, groceries, or access to recreational activities are things many of us take for granted, but for some, these are daily challenges. At Camino we understand that when basic needs are met, people can better focus on their wellbeing and mental health. This is why the Camino Cares Fund, made possible thanks to the generosity of our donors, is here to assist program participants with needs that extend beyond the scope of our services or other community resources.

The fund was created not only to meet immediate needs that impact overall wellbeing, but also to help recipients celebrate what is important to them. Whether it is providing grocery money for a family, or covering an aspiring student’s university entrance exam fee, the fund allows participants to take direct action. It helps alleviate some of the stress of life’s challenges, so they can focus on their wellbeing journey.

One participant shared how Winter Break from school was going to be a challenge. While many see it as a great two-week break for the kids, this family relied on school to provide snacks for lunch. Having both kids home for two weeks was going to significantly impact their grocery bill. The fund allowed them to stock their kitchen, reducing stress and ensuring their kids had enough to eat during the break. It also provided the parent with the means to get stockings for the kids to wake up to on Christmas morning.

Another recipient, a youth living on their own, received support from the Camino Cares Fund to get a guitar to replace the one they left behind at their parent’s home. A guitar was requested by the participant as it is a source of joy in her life and used as a grounding tool. She was very touched by the gift and felt moved that Camino truly cared about her wellbeing outside of the counselling sessions.

The Camino Cares Fund assists participants in Camino programs or services in ways that are meaningful to them. At Camino there is no wrong door when it comes to supporting the wellbeing and mental health of the people we serve. We strive to find ways to support individuals even beyond our core services. Our equitable approach leads to positive outcomes, improving the wellbeing journey of those we serve.
